Enlightening Conversations
Jonathan: Mama, why do I always feel funny going to the "Smith" house? (name changed to protect the innocent)
Me: I don't know. What do you mean by "funny?"
Jonathan: Like the way I feel about dogs.
Me: Hum? I don't know why. They don't have any dogs.
Jonathan: I know. But that's how I feel.
Me: Are you afraid of the girls?
Jonathan: No. I don't feel this way after I get there. I only feel this way knowing I'm going and all the way there.
Me: Hum? Do you feel this way about going to other people's homes?
Jonathan: No. Just this one.
Me: I don't know but it is very interesting.
Interesting because this house has a lot of emotional turmoil. I wonder if he senses this? He does seem to be in tune with things beyond the average person. When we got to the house this weekend, he stayed with me but not "with me" the first half the evening. He didn't play with the house full of children, he stayed near me and just did sideways somersaults on the floor when he wasn't eating chips and salsa. He would respond between tumbles if an adult addressed him specifically.
Thank you, all. Both my previous and loyal blogging friends and my new and hopefully soon to be loyal blogging friends! It was a very exciting weekend. Not only my 100th post, but I upgraded my cell phone to a keyboard. I really only have on person who texts me. He's in college now. He's a friend of Joshua's. Since you like pictures and funny stories, let me put both here.
The teen in the middle is Josh, my son. Thomas is behind Josh with the blue shirt. Don't let this picture fool you. I think Josh is standing on a stool. Thomas about four inches taller. We rented a lot of carnival type things this day and invited neighborhood kids in the afternoon and teenagers in the early evening. This was the first day we'd ever seen Thomas, although, we'd heard about Thomas for about six months.
A few days or weeks later, I don't remember which, Josh and Thomas were part of the fall high school sports awards. Their soccer coach makes them dress up for the awards, which makes the boys upset since they are the only team dressed up. However, their coach is a classy guy. And his team has a really bad reputation in the school. We parents figured he tries to clean them up on the outside hoping they'll behave. It doesn't work, they are an unruly gang.
Anyway, I drove Josh to the awards and we were waiting in the school lobby for the ceremony to begin. Thomas walks up to me and takes my right hand and engulfs them into his two big goalie hands. I'm feeling very small and intimidated because he's towering a foot over me, literally.
He says, "We've not met."
I said, "You were in my house recently. I remember because I said something about how manly you were to play FIFA soccer with the pink PS2 controller."
Thomas: Well, we've not been formerly introduced. Let me take the time now. My name is Thomas P____. My friends call me 'Honeybuns.' You can call me 'Buns.'
Me:
Thomas: I just wanted to introduce myself to Josh's mom.
Me:
Josh: Well, let's go say 'Hi' to the other team.
Thomas: Okay. Nice to meet you Josh's mom.
Me:
Josh said later, Mom, you turned all red and said nothing.
Me: I know. I was trying to figure out if I really heard what I thought I heard. And then I was trying to figure out how to respond to it. It all happened so fast, that I couldn't come up with an appropriate come back.
After that Thomas never stunned me into silence as I was never surprised about what he might say. I'll be sending him a care package of Easy Mac and Swedish Fish while I'm at the post office sending the prizes.

Thank you for helping me celebrate my 100th post this weekend. I went to Random.org first for those who left comments on Saturday's post encouraging me to work toward another 100 posts (even if that is not what you said, that was the effect.) Congratulations Elizabeth of a moon, worn as if it had been a shell. You won the $25.00 gift certificate from Barnes and Noble. Then I plugged in numbers 1 through 63 for the number of followers I had at the beginning of Saturday. (I added Niksmom of Maternal Instincts because she said she subscribed to me on a feeder and wanted to know if I'd still love her.) However it was Stephanie of Stark Raving Bibliophile who will receive the first book bag filled with office supplies. Yeah! Come to my profile page and find my email. Send me your address so I can send your prizes!Thank you, all. Both my previous and loyal blogging friends and my new and hopefully soon to be loyal blogging friends! It was a very exciting weekend. Oh my gosh...I LOVE starting the morning with a laugh and you just provided that. You can call me BUNS!!! ROFL!!! The funniest part was Me:
I think it would have been great if you could insert crickets chirping right there.LOL
My boys are now 26, 23 and 20....so I am no longer shocked into silence....E.V.E.R!!
Thanks for the laugh. How i love those conversations!
Congtats on 100th post.

Jonathan apprehension reminds me of an experience I had as a child. We were rarely allowed to spend the night away from home, but there were a few where we were allowed to do so. When one family moved into their new house I could never make it through the night. I always called home and had to be picked up in the wee hours of the morning. There was just something about this house that I couldn't get with. Come to find out the husband's mother dealt in witchcraft and the new home had been "blessed." For me, something had changed. Kids can be very sensitive. I have no doubt that Jonathan feels the tension in that home. I know you're listening. Congratulations, Corrie, on your 100th post! May you write many many more!
I love it when teens actually have a great sense of humor and personality that you don't have to pull out of them! Thomas is a stitch...although I'm not sure I'd let him date my daughter....buns, eh?
Sorry I missed your post over the weekend. I do want to tell you that the name of your blog always makes me smile. Sideways somersaults between chips n salsa nibbles is great. We should all do that more often...
Thanks for putting a smile on my face so early this morning. And again, congratulations on that 100th post! Looking forward to the next 100!
You made me snort out loud today. Thanks to you, and to Buns.
What a cute kid!! Why aren't they all like that??
Nearly choked on my coffee when I got to the "You can call me 'buns'..." How did you keep a straight face??
get your kid on Pyschic Kids immediately. If you haven't seen that show, dvr it. It has great humor that I don't think is supposed to really be there.
interesting that he feels funny going to their house.
The Thomas story made me laugh!! Too funny!
Congrats on 100 posts!
What a funny kid!
You can call me BUNS...oh man, that cracked me up! Could you imagine "Josh, ask Buns if he'd like some juice with his dinner". I mean, it just sounds wierd.
But at least the kid is polite...wow, that's impressive, esp for a teenager!
Thank you so much! I am thrilled to win the book certificate! And by the way, this post was great -- your teen boy is just so handsome!
Oh, I miss working with teenagers.
WHAT an awesome kid! He reminds me of a friend of my brother's. :)
haha well posted mom. i appreciate the publicity.
What a character! Buns! And congrats on your 100th post!
Thanks for the laugh, Josh's mom :) And by the way, he is such a handsome boy.
Hehehe!! I love teens!
No, my little guy isn't sitting unsupported quite yet! He is still a bit rolly. He does well on the couch, when he has pillows on either side of his toosh!
"He does seem to be in tune with things beyond the average person."
I think you are right. So many things are heightened for our kids - I've always believed that sensitivity to perceptions and other intangibles are among them.
And isn't it true that these funny teenage boys grow up into funny men?
Buns...that is awesome. Gotta love the formality that proceeds the nickname! Fabulous. I am just now getting around to blogging...10:30pm. LONG day, filled with many surprises. Now I'm exhausted, but wanted to check in with everyone if only for a moment. Hope you had a wonderful day! Holly at LLL.
That Thomas story is so funny!! I can just imagine your face when he said that. I think that you're right about Jonathan sensing emotional turmoil in that house. He seems very perceptive.
Congrats on your 100th post!! Before you know it, you'll be at your 200th! I'll be here :)
HILARIOUS!!! My son is 3... I see what I have to look forward to!
