Memoir Monday - Don't Come Home Without A Watch

It's Monday which means we can play Memoir Monday with Travis at I Like to Fish. I believe the only rule is that your memory has to be true. So write your post, including Travis' book below, and send a link to Travis. He'll post it with others. Check out the other memoirs. They are always good for a laugh.

One morning when Jonathan was three I came into the family room and observed Jonathan staring up at the clock. He asked, "What are the lines between the numbers?" I wondered to myself what three year old 1) knows how to tell time and 2) notices the "lines between the numbers?" Thus began Jonathan's fascination with time.

This year I come downstairs for breakfast and I find this

"I wanted to know if the minute hand actually moves. Guess what, it does!"

Jonathan started wearing a watch when he was four. It only comes off when he takes a bath or goes swimming. Somewhere around first or second grade, Jonathan came down in the morning and announced his watch stopped. Well, I didn't stop to talk to him about it, instead I immediately called Scott, "Don't you dare come home without a new watch."

In the meantime, Jonathan started panicking, "I don't know what time it is." So I walked him around the house and pointed out all the clocks in the house. And since he was headed off to school, I told him there are clocks all around the school too, he just needed to look."

I realized I should have a collection of back up watches in the house. I found a purple watch on-line. I thought it would go great with Jonathan's Purple Man comic character. And the same site had a green one for Faith's Green Girl comic character. What's even cooler, is that the watch case looks like a giant Lego. But, alas, Jonathan is a creature of habit, just like his father. I'm afraid, I'll have to buy a dozen of the watches that he started off with. It reminds me of the scene from Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium where Mr. Magorium bought a "lifetime supply of shoes" from an Italian cobbler, nine hundred years prior. And now that his last pair of shoes is almost worn out, so soon will Mr. Magorium.

Oh, and Honey, if you are reading this post and haven't got my Valentine's Day present yet, here is just one idea (Black or Red Valentine's theme. P.S. Don't be scared by the music on the site like I was.) I'll look around for some more.

So, the line, "Time to buy a watch" doesn't fly at your house, huh.

Erin February 8, 2010 3:21 PM

My daughter Izzy LOVES to wear her Dora watch. It's so funny the things they get attached to.

I buy watches for every special occasion the boys use to go to so it will match their suits. So we should have atleast 20+ watches in our home and do you know none of us in the home wear a watch anymore?? I just realized that after reading your post =/

I love the extra message to hubs :O)

Of all the things in life to become obessed with...I think a watch/time is a very workable obession! And really, the creativity is limitless! You can make nearly anything into a clock....fun stuff!

My step-dad bought 20 pairs of the same tennis shoes. By the time he got to the last pairs the soles had started to disintegrate.

Great fun post! :) Thanks for posting on my stress reducers post! You are one of the reasons why I keep posting it and also to remind myself of some of these reminders! You are wonderful! Have a great week!

Helene February 8, 2010 11:52 PM

Hey, I gotta love a male who is as observant of time as Jonathan is! My husband would be late to his own funeral...and you know the kicker of all this?? He actually collects watches...yet he's late for everything.

Love that picture! I remember teaching my oldest son how to tell time and now am teaching my youngest. What precious memories for us!

Tanya @ TeenAutism February 9, 2010 1:22 AM

Nigel definitely shares Jonathan's fascination with time, but he didn't get started that early! Amazing!

Jonathan has great taste in color! Good one on sneaking in the Valentine's Day suggestion. :0)

p.s. I saw your comment at Rita's Friday Follow observations post. I wanted to say that the system is to just follow as many as you like and NOT try to keep up and follow everyone. There is not a requirement for you to do so. We three hostesses do and I usually follow into Saturday evening.

I hope you come by for this week's Friday Follow and leave the stress behind! :0)

Traci February 9, 2010 9:15 AM

Oh, I remember that story in Mr. Magorium's about the shoes. I hope he at least, found easily replaced watches. What a great memory.

I love that his comic character is Purple Man, BTW.

Tracie February 10, 2010 11:14 AM

Terry February 10, 2010 4:03 PM

A few days late responding due to computer issues, but I'm trying to catch up (had to sneak downstairs and use the desktop...ewwwww)
I must say this is an awesome trait for your son to have!! A man that can tell time is going to be a ladies killer!!
And I loved the ice-watch!! yes, your hubby should get you one!

TOM February 15, 2010 9:45 PM

Well I hope you got your watch!! I must say I haven't worn one for some time but they are really getting quite stylish and I am tired of reaching for my cell phone just to check the time!
