Preempting Thursday Tackle for Letter to School Board

Besides the fact that I didn't have a chance to research my Thursday Tackle this week, I wanted to bring you a letter Jonathan wrote to the school board. Longtime readers know the fact Jonathan WROTE anything on his own initiative is a miracle. Recent readers haven't read about the homework battles in the Howe household. I think Homework Battle #5 was in November.

It's been a difficult couple of weeks for us, I think between the holidays and the snow, it is like when Jonathan transitions back into school routines after a long break. He's had a number of meltdowns lately. We've had three in the last week. Prior to this past week it has been a year since the last meltdown. We try to describe Jonathan's meltdowns to people as watching a stick of butter melt into a pool in a hot frying pan. A friend of ours happened to be here last night. He said, he heard us describe it, but now that he'd seen it, he agrees this is exactly what Jonathan looks like...a pool of melted butter.

So while we were downstairs with our small group Bible study, Jonathan was upstairs writing. I'm going to type it exactly as it is written. I should note, he handed me the letter folded in thirds and on the top he wrote, 'the "Great" invenchon HOMEWORK'

2-24-10
Dear school board,
there is NO reason for homework. There never was a good and true reason and there never will Be. We have 6 hours of the worst thing ever invented (school) and when we get home from school, what do you know more school work. If your thinking "oh well Homework is so you don't forget what you learned at school that day." then I'll tell you somthing: WHAT KIND OF IDIOT FORGETS WHAT THEY LEARNED IN SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Plus homework keeps kids from playing outside and playing outside is now we get our exrsise. school is only 10% of my proBlem homework is 90% of my problem. Please GET RID OF THE STUPED HOMEWORK!

sincirely,
Jonathan Howe

P.S. sorry if you think I'm being mean But I'm earatated ok.
First of all, my next door neighbor happens to be an elected School Board member. He's known Jonathan, all my son's life. Bill will get a kick out of this letter. And he might actually do something with it.

Second, if I were to grade the letter, I'd give it a good grade for content. He has a good "voice." He's presented his argument well for a 4th grader. I'm really impressed that he has correctly formatted and punctuated a letter of correspondence. He continues to have trouble with proper capitalization and spelling. However, he's spelling phonetically. He's communicating his ideas and his message.

So how do you think the school board will respond? Will they be impressed with his well articulated and reasoned arguments and waive future homework? Or will they say his spelling and capitalization negates his own argument about forgetting what he learned in school?

You know what? My 7 year old would agree with everything Jonathan has said and I do believe our kids have a point. I am forever trying to explain to my son that homework is to practice what they learned in school and his response is pretty much what Jonathan says. I think it is an excellent letter, well articulated, well done Jonathan. Promise you will post about how the Board responds? Jen.

I agree totally. I always hated homework. To me it was just busy work to rush through so I could do something fun or worthwhile.

I was surprised when you said fourth grade, and impressed definitely.

i doubt any school board would take it seriously, from any student.

I'm afraid homework will always be there for students.

It's a wonderful effort on Jonathon's part.

That letter is FABULOUS! He did a wonderful job getting his point across. I think the Board should be impressed with the content and not worry about the little mistakes. Go Jonathan!

His meltdowns sound just like Son's and we have been having problems with meltdowns coming easier lately too. And there will be another disruption of the school schedule do to MORE snow!

He has a wonderful voice and is very adept at getting his point across.

I have to admit though, I don't agree with him on the homework front. I think homework is important. Often times we learn a new skill by repeating it. (please don't throw things at me)

It's funny you post this, I had a discussion with my three this morning and they laughed at me when I said, "You know what guys, school is the easiest thing you will ever have to do in life". But it's true. Think of your life as an adult, wouldn't you love to be back in school...knowing what you know now about life?

We have the same issues with homework! My 13 yr old, who is home schooled, will usually have a melt down during homework time! My 10 yr old, who goes to public school, is not a fan of the homework, but will do it without a fuss. Because of the melt downs, I am not a fan of homework, either!

I agree with Jonathon! Good luck!

Mom's Place February 25, 2010 9:54 AM

All of my school kids would agree with him! Especially my 4th grader, who has who knows what running through her head all of the time, side tracking her from what she is supposed to be doing when out of the classroom!

I couldn't describe meltdowns any better than that! Perfect! I know have a visual that I can use when trying to describe my 3rd graders melt downs!

Meltdowns are no fun! I have to agree with Jonathan on the Homework issue... they give these kids too much! I can't even do half of it and I feel I am very Educated! Way to go Jonathan.. Loved it!!!

I think that Jonathan is spectacular and puts up a good argument against homework, especially the exercise part! I can't wait to hear what your neighbor on the school board says

I think they give kids to much homework that is for sure!

I love that he's writing.

Can't speak for the unpredictable school board, but I'd get rid of homework too. Way to go Jonathan for writing such a well though out argument.

Tracie February 25, 2010 7:05 PM

I think that was better than most of my blog posts. I love the way he used the exercise argument and the blurb he added at the end was priceless.

Stephanie February 25, 2010 8:39 PM

I am with Jonathan -- my daughter was in public school for 4 years, and I always disagreed with homework. I felt it intruded on our precious family time. Kudos to him for speaking up. :-) Using the exercise argument was brilliant!

I think he and my stepbrother have a lot in common. And I know for sure my stepbrother would vote for Jonathan for president in a heartbeat!

I think homework is useful in certain quantities and for certain subjects, but I also think that it's waaay overused in most schools.

Lindsey February 25, 2010 9:48 PM

I agree with Jonathan! My children with special needs all have no homework clauses in their IEPs. They have enough problems with school and with transitioning home after school, there is no way they are going to sit down and do homework! And you know what, they are all on the honor roll, so so much for homework!!!

Nigel has talked about writing a letter like that! Good for Jonathan for doing it!

LMJ February 26, 2010 12:19 AM

awesome letter! He has a great point with the lack of exercise with too much homework....
yet, all his spelling errors prove that homework should be given.

so cute!!

Corrie, I have a blog question for you, if you don't mind could you email me - halfadozenkids@hotmail.com

Thanks!

You know, I totally agree with Jonathan on the homework deal. My sister's kids get so much homework that they are literally up until 10:00 pm every night struggling with it. These poor kids spend all day long in school...they should be able to come home and run around outside or hang out at the park burning off energy from having to sit in a classroom for 6-7 hours a day.

I look at it this way...the people who work 8-5 every day get to come home and spend their time however they want to. They aren't expected to continue their work once they're home, right?

Although, I also have to say, when I read your very last sentence, I did kinda chuckle. That's also a valid point!!

Foursons February 27, 2010 11:09 AM

Haha- this cracks me up because he just assigned himself homework by writing the letter. I guess he's hoping it will be his last assignment. Please let us know how the neighbor reacts!

jdcoughlin February 27, 2010 1:24 PM

I LOVE that! I absolutely love that he is pissed off and has written it down with the intention of doing something about it, or at the very least sharing how P.O'd he is about it. Love, love that. And am right there with you, great voice! That little spelling thing at the end, might cost him a few points, but that was such a sweet closer!

JennyMac February 27, 2010 2:15 PM

Love a young man ready to take pen in hand to voice his opinions...this is great.

Erin February 27, 2010 2:26 PM

Although I hated homework and my twins aren't old enough to have homework, I do think *some* homework is necessary. But when I hear about the kids who have hours upon hours of it each night, I have to wonder...

I think the point of homework is to reinforce what's learned during the school day---some kids might need that while others do not. I always did.

Regardless, I think his letter is great and hopefully it made him feel a bit better to express himself. And he did it so well!

Kellyansapansa February 27, 2010 5:59 PM

What a fantastic letter - he should be very proud of his work, even if the school board are a bunch of stuffed shirts who don't listen!

PS - you've been tagged.

I think that he makes perfect sense! They give kids a lot of homework these days!

i think his letter is amazing...he has my support...think i may give it to my boss as well..smiles.

I actually agree with this a lot! If this was a petition, I'd sign it for Jonathan, for sure!

Tell J that I couldn't agree with him more. It makes me SO mad when my kids have more than 30 min. of homework. It is completely unnecessary. Last year, in 3rd grade, my son routinely had 1 1/2 hours of homework a night. Not goofing off, not getting up a hundred times, not complaining...just sitting there and working. Why not just extend the school day and make teachers deal with it! YEAH J! Holly

Ms Bibi March 1, 2010 12:33 PM

I am with him 100%. I always though homework sucked.

I love his letter.Right to the point and that's how kids feel. That's how we felt when we went to school.

Penny Williams March 1, 2010 1:00 PM

That is so fantastic! Good for him in trying to place blame where he feels it belongs too, rather than on you. My kids want to punish me for making them go to school. Like I invented school or something!

I understand it all perfectly. That is by far one of the best letters ever. Everyone complains kids do not get enough exercise but then what do they expect the kids to do at home, but more homework. "What kind of idiot forgets what he learned at school" Classic line! Thanks you for sharing!

Betty Manousos:cutand-dry.blogspot.com March 2, 2010 6:31 AM

Corrie, I totally agree. I always hated homework.
That's how kids feel. I remember me how I felt when I was at school.
